Does Acupuncture Work for Pain and Other Common Concerns?

For several common pain conditions, the research says yes. Large reviews of clinical trials support acupuncture for back and neck pain, knee osteoarthritis, and migraine prevention. The American College of Physicians also includes acupuncture among the first-line, non-drug options for chronic low-back pain.

Evidence for stress, sleep, digestion and women’s health varies by condition. Dr. Bemis brings 25 years of community health experience and will tell you directly where acupuncture fits, where it complements other care, and where it does not.

Ear acupuncture at a community clinic

Ear Acupuncture and Acudetox for Recovery Support

Crossroads supports people in recovery with ear acupuncture, known as acudetox, alongside their recovery program. Acupuncture is not a substitute for addiction treatment or medical care.

Crossroads is part of a regional network of clinics offering acudetox, and hosts a monthly group, Peace Down Acudetox.

Frequently asked questions

What can acupuncture help with?

People come to Crossroads most often for back and neck pain, headaches and migraines, shoulder and joint pain, stress and anxiety, sleep, digestion, sinus and allergy concerns, and women's health. Acupuncture works alongside your other care, not in place of it, and Dr. Bemis tells you plainly if something is outside what acupuncture can do for you.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel very little. Acupuncture uses thin, sterile, single-use needles placed at selected points. You may feel a brief pinch, a dull ache or a warm, heavy feeling. Many people relax deeply during treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are working with and how long it has been going on. Some people notice a change within the first few visits, and others need more time. At your first visit, Dr. Bemis builds a plan with you and adjusts it as you go.

Do you offer a free consult?

Yes. Your first step is a free 20-minute consult with Dr. Bemis, with no cost and no deposit. Ask your questions, share what is going on and decide if Crossroads is the right fit before you book a treatment.

Does insurance cover acupuncture at Crossroads?

Crossroads accepts BCBS, Aetna, Humana, Presbyterian and UHC. Insurance plans usually cover acupuncture only for pain that affects your daily functioning, and coverage varies by plan, so use our insurance check form or call us before your visit. Veterans registered with the VA may pay $0 with prior authorization from their primary care provider. If you are paying on your own, we offer affordable cash rates, so call 575-312-6569 to ask about pricing. Details are on our Insurance and costs page.

Do you offer care in Spanish?

Yes. Se habla español. Dr. Bemis offers full sessions in Spanish, and Crossroads hosts a monthly Spanish-language group.

Is somatic release the same as somatic therapy?

People often search for somatic therapy. At Crossroads we offer somatic release and breathwork: guided, body-based practices that are often combined with acupuncture. They are not psychotherapy or counseling and do not replace mental health care. If you work with a therapist, they fit alongside it.

Can I use acupuncture alongside my other care?

Yes. Acupuncture works alongside your other care, not in place of it. Tell your other providers you are coming to Crossroads, and talk with your prescriber before changing any medication. Dr. Bemis never asks you to stop anything a provider has prescribed.
